These days, balancing work and the rest of your personal life can seem impossible. With smartphones and email notifications around the clock, it’s hard to step away from being on “work mode.”
But you should and here’s why.
Everyone’s work ethic is different, and everyone has different levels of energy. But if you’re feeling tired all the time and feeling a lack of motivation, it’s time to take some steps toward balance.
If you’re working so much that you don’t have the time to properly feed yourself nutritious meals, that’s a problem. If you’re finding that you don’t have time to connect with friends and family the way that you feel you should be, there’s room for improvement. If you’re not sleeping because you’re so anxious about work, then it’s time for a change.
These habits are unsustainable in the long run and will make you feel crummy in the short term. Feeling crummy will lead to less than awesome work, and higher rates of depression, anxiety, chronic pain, and a weakened immune system.
The best way to help your business is to help yourself first.
If you want to maintain the mental sanity to keep your business operating at it’s best, you need to set some boundaries for yourself.
Start by taking some time to unplug. Go for a walk somewhere where there’s no wifi connection, and bask in the ability to not think about emails for a couple of hours.
Schedule time with family and friends. Recharging is so important, and your social life is crucial to maintaining a healthy mental state. Working can feel lonely, and when everything seems to revolve around work, it’s important to take a step back and check in with other stuff going on in the world, like your best friend’s love life, what your kids are learning about in school, or what TV shows your partner’s been watching lately.
Don’t promise too much too quickly, but ease into it. Schedule a dinner date for one night each week and put your phone on silent. Your brain will thank you later.
